Death...
I certainly thought that I would be having a serious conversation about death with Owen someday...I just didn't envision that he would be just 3 years old when it happened.
Today, Owen asked me about dying. He came up to me and asked, "Mommy, am I going to die?" I believe in being honest with him...the catch is finding the balance between giving him an answer without adding more information which will cause anxiety or distress. I found this question to be a difficult one to answer just so.
So I said, yes, that one day he would die...hopefully, many, many years from now. He then asked me if I was going to die, and I told him that yes, I too would die...but hopefully when I'm old. He then said to me, "Can I have Mousey with me when I die", and his eyes filled with tears. I could see that he was not handling this very well...and I didn't really know what to say...so I held him and told him that dying is just a part of the cycle of life...we are born, we live, (hopefully a happy and fulfilling life) then, we die.
He then asked more questions about death...naming people he knows...is Grant going to die? (Yes) Is Vicki going to die? (Yes)...Ugh. Eventually I changed the subject, which was OK...but he came back about half an hour later and asked me again about dying.
I better do some reading about this, so I am better prepared. I don't know why I thought we'd deal with the sex talk first...(for that one, I am prepared!!!)..but this one caught me off guard...and my little guy is such a sensitive little person, it was especially challenging for me...
Sigh.

Mini Family Reunion!
We decided it was about time that we went to visit Aunt Julie and Uncle Mike in Austin...it just happened that Grandma Mary was visiting too, so we invited ourselves and headed south.
We had a very relaxing time...didn't do too many activities except swimming and going to some caves. Other than that, we hung out at J&M's house, played with bubbles, dug and excavated! Here are some random pics.

M.A.C.
Today Joe suggested we spend the afternoon at the Museum of Arts & Culture. What a lovely time had by all...(except at the end, but I won't get into that!) Ha! Here are the usual suspects...
Shadows
Birds? Planes? Art!

Pinocchio!
Yesterday we went to a play at a local school to see Pinocchio! It was put on by the Missoula Children's Theatre and Franklin Elementary. It just so happened that a friend's son was in it...he was one of the toy soldiers.
Now I've never read Pinocchio, so I wasn't sure if the play was true to the story...of course there were some obvious artistic liberties taken; for example, one of the naughty children who drop out of school to go to Pleasure Isle, (or whatever it was called), dialogue included the phrase, "Far out! Whoa"...which I highly doubt was in the original story!
Anyway...the play was really good...the kids did awesome...and the gym/cafeteria was jammed packed. We had met Maggie, Louis and Chloe there, and the six of us sat together in the 3rd or 4th row. Chloe and Louis used their seats for the whole play, (quite impressive!!!)...on the other hand, O lasted about 3 minutes in his seat, and then was mostly under it, until the show started. He then ventured out to the aisle, where he remained for the whole 1.25 hours...every so often creeping up until he was lined up with the front row. Not once did I see him look back to make sure his parents had not: a) Left. or b) Died. Joe and I kept our eyes on him though...(and Maggie too! Ha).
Since this blog is about O, let me get to the part that really matters...He was completely mesmerized by the show...when there was music or singing, he'd dance. All alone. Just dance. He'd clap and squeal, especially when a few of the cast members ran into the audience...It was pretty adorable...and when Pinocchio and Mrs. Gepetto (yes, another liberty!), wondered out loud if the grey whale was still around, Owen shouted, "He's over there!" pointing into the darkness.
So this, his first play was a total success...After the show, he watched the cast get photographs taken and climbed onto the bleachers where the Choir stood...we were the last to leave!
Give yourself a hand little buddy!

Owen's 3rd Christmas...
We woke up around our usual 7ish on this cold and snow covered Christmas morning...I came downstairs and waited for you and you dad to come downstairs...You knew something was up, because you stayed in the hallway for what seemed an eternity!!! I was videotaping the whole thing, and I have 4 minutes of a door way! Ha! Eventually you CRAWLED in...and hid behind the couch!
Then acted completely goofy!
Then...over the next few hours, we slowly opened each present..taking some time to appreciate and play with them...Here are a couple of videos and pics!
Beautiful tree...with an abundance of presents...
With dad and a new tie...

Reading a Dr. Seuss book...(one of the 30 Aunt Julie and Uncle Michael sent him!!!Ha! Thanks so much!)
Beading a necklace...(Thanks Aunt Gigi and Uncle Victor!)
Building a marble maze...(Thanks Grandma Mary!)
Building a Carnival Fort with dad!!! (Thanks Aunt Lupe, Uncle Greg and Santi!!!)

Christmas Eve...
As we get ready to spend our second Christmas, (just the 3 of us) in Spokane, tonight, we continued with the tradition that we started last year. Going caroling at Cannon Park...around a bonfire. This is a neighborhood tradition that I found out about last year by total accident, and even though we don't live in the Cannon Park neighborhood, we crashed it. Twice.
Last year we were on time...this year, we caught the last 10 minutes of it...I had written the time in my Outlook calendar, so I would know the time this year...but, when my computer crashed this year, all of my important notes and dates in my calendar vanished into thin air...So, just in case (KNOCK ON WOOD)...that this computer suffers a similar fate, let me mention that the caroling starts at 5:30! :-)
Owen was not interested in caroling...so I left O and J with the sled, and joined my far away neighbors in the last two songs...the crowd was much smaller than last year...and there was 3 times the snow and wind...so there you have it. As soon as the singing stopped, the place was emptied in a matter of minutes...so we had the park to ourselves. O did a bit of sledding and fire management, (I'll add a couple of videos in the next day or two) and I photographed and just took it all in...the beauty, my lovely family that fills my heart with joy...I love you O...Merry Christmas little buddy...you are truly the best.
